Heidi Klum, Sergio Marchionne, and Bob Lutz: Exclusive L.A. Auto Show photos from Consumer and Car Exam!

In the right places at the right times

Sometimes, life just works out that way. Going to the L.A. Auto Show this past week provided several surprising and very unexpected photo opportunities for The Car Exam. While the whole event seemed especially cut-throat in terms of trying to any meaningful interviews with the higher-ups in the auto-industry (that wasn't pleasant), The Car Exam was lucky enough to be in several of the right places at the right times on the first day--and get some unexpected and great photos of Heidi Klum, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne and former Chrysler and GM executive Bob Lutz.

That was the highlight of the show, although there were some new cars of interest at the auto show as well. Also, THe Car Exam drove two cars for upcoming quick quizzes: The Audi A3 TDI and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Look for those coming soon.

Enjoy the photos...

The Car Exam Quick Quiz #22: The 2011 Nissan Leaf

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

Good Grades: Excellent low-end power from the electric motor. It felt like driving a strong V6 engine from take-off. The Electric motor makes a “jet engine” sound, which I like. It’s not annoying. The acceleration is strong in “normal” mode. The ride is firm, but not too firm. Cornering ability is decent. Interior materials are good and the gauges are clear. The front seats are comfortable, as well as the driving position. The outward view from all windows inside of the car is decent. The styling of the Leaf isn't bad--but it won't appeal to everyone.

Bad Grades: Only an 80 to 100 mile driving range (give or take some), depending upon how you drive it and the use of accessories (a/c, etc.); back seat feel could be a lot better, slow and blunted acceleration in “eco” mode, love it or hate it styling, not enough charging stations and long charging time.

Final Grade: The whole idea of having to plan you trip around town is highly annoying. Most people just want to get into their cars and drive—and a lot of them want to be able to drive long distances. The Leaf does have its merits, especially if you don’t plan to drive a long distance—but if you ever wanted to, you’re out of luck in the Leaf.

The Car Exam Grade: C- (only because of its limited driving range)

Consumer and Car Exam News # 26: News and notes from the O.C. Auto Show

News and notes from the O.C. Auto Show

The Orange County Auto Show wrapped up in early October, but The Car Exam has some relevant news and notes it wants to share:

1. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt:

Chevrolet Product Development Specialist Tricia Opper gave me a tour of the 2011 Chevrloet Volt, which The Car Exam has covered extensively in recent months--though I have yet to drive it (I have driven its direct competition, the Nissan Leaf, which I will review in an upcoming article). I asked Ms. Opper who will be the the typical Volt customer? She explains the Volt will be “Perfect for anyone. Nearly 80% [of all drivers] drive less than 40 miles to work.”

Combined with the fact that the Chevy Volt has a gasoline engine that kicks in after the lithium ion batteries lose their charge and can take the driver about another 300 miles, she might be on to something. As long as the driver has gas in the tank, "range anxiety" should not be a problem for people wanting to take trips longer than 25-50 miles, which is the range of the Volt batteries (depending upon driving conditions and the use of electrical accessories, of course).

What's the top speed of the Chevy Volt? Ms. Opper tells me it's 100 miles per hour, but "it's best to drive the speed limit"--I can't argue with her there! :)

2. Jaguar News:

Colleen, a Product Specialist for Jaguar showed me some new cars, including the XKR (which starts at $90,000 dollars), and the Jaguar XJ, which ranges in base price from $73,575 to $114,075. 510 hp Supercharged models are available for customers who have the need to move faster, and some features available on the XJ line include HD dashboard and Panoramic glass.

3. Land Rover News:

Dora, a Product Specialist for Land Rover showed me SUV's from their product line: the LR2 (which starts at $36,350)--Land Rover's smallest vehicle, the LR4 (base price: $48,500); the Range Rover Sport (base price $60,500), and the Range Rover HSE (base price: $79,700--but $95,500 for the supercharged model). Dora briefly spoke about the the upcoming 2012 Evoque model, which will be a very important addition for the Land Rover brand.

4. Notes from Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman:

I had an opportunity to meet and chat with Motor Trend magazine's Jonny Lieberman, and he graciously showed me around the floor of the auto show. Here are some vehicles we spoke about:

A. The Cadillac XLS, the big sedan poised to replace both the DTS and the STS (there may be a hybrid model).

B. The return of the Volkswagen Phaeton to the U.S. market--will it work? Jonny says it sells well in Europe--it's an aspirational vehicle there, but it wasn't here in the United States. However, it does share a platform with the Bentley Continental. I'm not too optimistic about the expensive Phaeton.

C. Upcoming Cars to look for at the Detroit Auto Show: A new Lamborghini, the revised Bentley Continental, and the new Volvo S60.

D. Will the Fiat 500 be a viable car in the U.S. market? It can be. Also, Fiat plans to to bring vans and trucks to the U.S. market as well, so it looks like it is going to take full advantage of its affiliation with Chrysler.

5. The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

This is one sharp-looking Mustang--period. The legendary Boss 302 returns for the 2012 model year, and a reported 440-plus horsepower V8 engine on tap. The track model, the Laguna Seca Boss 302 was on display.

Its menacing, yet spectacular black paint with red trim looks absolutely terrific on the Mustang, and Ford shouldn't have any problem selling them--if the economy doesn't go into the tank any further, that is. The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 definitely looks like a winner.

The Car Exam News #25: The Dodge chief says: "Oooh--Barracuda...returns?"

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

The Return of the Plymouth Barracuda?

The Barracuda makes a comeback? Maybe so: The Detroit Free Press (Via USA Today) is reporting that Dodge President and CEO Ralph Gilles says that people are hungry for the return of the Barracuda model and the company is trying to figure out a way to do it. It would be a modified Challenger, of course, but another problem remains: Chrysler killed the Plymouth brand a decade ago, so if the Barracuda returned, it would have to be branded as a Chrysler or a Dodge. Stay tuned to see how this story plays out!

The Car Exam News #24: Encouraging GM and Ford News

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

Good news for General Motors

Good news for GM this week: The Detroit Free Press reports that GM will build a new, smaller Cadillac, the ATS, at its Lansing Grand River plant. The ATS will be smaller and priced lower than the CTS (pictured above). No word yet on when production of the ATS will begin.

Source: The Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/article/20101027/BUSINESS01/101027034/1210/business01/GM-Lansing-plant-will-build-new-Cadillac) 10/27/10

More good GM news--and good news for Ford, too: Consumer Reports is reporting that the reliability of GM's cars is improving--a must if it wants its recovery to continue. Recently launched vehicles, such as the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Camaro and Equinox, and the Buick LaCrosse V6 (FWD) have proven to be reliable from the start--something not very common to GM in recent decades. Some older GM models, like the Corvette, for example, have even improved with their reliability. GM can still do a lot better, though, as it still trails far behind the leading Asian brands (Toyota and Honda, for example) in reliability. If GM can keep improving, it just may get back on top one day...

Meanwhile, Ford continues to shine. Consumer Reports also notes that 90% of all Ford models (including Lincoln) are at least rated as having at least average reliability. Furthermore, Fords are now more reliable than Mazdas and Nissans, and just lags behind the legendary Toyota luxury brand, Lexus--quite an impressive feat. Ford has already had good news earlier in the week of record third-quarter profits of a whopping $1.7 billion dollars, so executives in Dearborn must be jumping for joy!

The Car Exam News #23: Nissan begins production of the Leaf, and Cadillac axes the V8 in the STS

Nissan begins production of the Leaf

Nissan turns a new Leaf: Automotive News reports that Nissan has began production of the Leaf electric car in Japan and will begin exporting it to the U.S. next month. Production of the Leaf will not begin in the U.S. (in Tennessee) until the late 2012. Batteries for the Leaf are currently being produced in Japan, and will later be produced in the U.S. and in Europe.

Cadillac axes the V8 in the 2011 STS

A V8 no more: USA Today is reporting that Cadillac is axing the 320-horsepower, 4.6-liter V8 engine from The STS, leaving the only the 302-hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine as the only choice. The V6 is more fuel efficient than V8 and only has 18 fewer horsepower, so the move makes more sense, especially with new CAFE rules taking effect soon from the U.S. government.

The Car Exam News #22: Another big Toyota recall, and the Dodge Journey gets a better interior

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

Another big Toyota recall

Here we go again: The Detroit Free Press reports that Toyota is recalling over 1.5 million Toyota Avalon and Lexus models worldwide (but mostly in the U.S. and Japan) due to leaking seals in the brake master cylinder in some models, while others (none in the U.S.) have an electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine to stall.

The 2011 Dodge Journey gets a better interior—and more

The Dodge revision continues: Automotive News is reporting that Dodge has revised the interior in the Journey crossover. There is a new instrument panel, center stack, new steering wheel, heating and cooling vents, a U Connect Touch system with Garmin Navigation and Voice recognition, and more. By the way, for those interested in horsepower numbers, the 2011 Journey will receive the Pentastar V6 engine with 283 hp.

The Car Exam News #21: The Chevy Volt in small supply, and Chrysler's lineup grows

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

Chevy Volt to be in small supply

If you're eager to buy a new Chevrolet Volt, you may not want to get your hopes up at first: Automotive News reports that GM will only produce 10,000 Volts in 2011--yikes! This may be a serious tactical error on GM's part. According to the Automotive News article, Chevrolet will have a large marketing blitz to promote the Volt, but if eager customers want to go out and buy a Volt--and find out they probably won't be able to get their grubby paws on them until 2012--they may just say "forget it" and seek out alternate vehicle options (some may turn to the Nissan Leaf--if Nissan doesn't do the same thing GM is doing). GM may hope "pent up" customer demand will drive Chevrolet Volt sales, but they had better hope a lack of Volts doesn't diminish it.

Source: Automotive News (http://www.autonews.com) 10/18/10

Chrysler's lineup grows

Apparently, Chrysler/Fiat thinks the more, the merrier: The Detroit Free Press reports that Chrysler is bucking the trend set by Ford and General Motors: instead of subtracting brands from their model lineup, Chrysler/Fiat is adding new brands. The addition of the Fiat brand in early 2011, Chrysler has already separated their pickups from the Dodge brand into their own Ram brand, and after the Fiat launch, Alfa Romeo will be re-introduced in to the U.S., and five models from that brand will be sold.

That is quite a gamble for Chrysler/Fiat. However, several facts remain: if the cars have terrible build quality and reliability and no one buys them, Chrysler is once again "up a creek without a paddle." Sergio Marchionne and his crew had better work hard--and pray they get it right.

The Car Exam News # 20: Toyota to debut larger Prius at the Detroit Auto Show, and the U.S. won’t get the new Ford Ranger

Toyota to debut larger Prius at the Detroit Auto Show

Toyota ups the ante in the hybrid sweepstakes: The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Toyota is going to introduce a brand-new Prius model at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The new Prius, to be sold alongside the current car, will be larger and is said to have “more comfort, better styling and more versatility.” The new Prius should be a 2012 model. After seeing a teaser photo, it looks like the new Prius model could be styled like a crossover utility vehicle or small van.

Source: The Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/article/20101015/BUSINESS01/10150378/1331/Toyota-to-show-new-Prius-hybrid-at-Detroit-auto-show) 10/15/10

The U.S. won’t get the new Ford Ranger

Looks like we're stuck with the F-150: Automotive News has reported that Ford will not sell the all-new 2012 version of the Ford Ranger pickup in the United States that it will be selling in 180 other countries around the world. This will be the first time in almost 30 years that Ford will not be selling a compact pickup in the U.S. market.

What is Ford's reasoning? Apparently, the new Ranger is apparently too close in size to the current Ford F-150 pickups, so Ford is gambling on U.S. customers purchasing a base model F-150 instead. The Car Exam says this may backfire: not everyone wants a large truck, so Ford just may lose a pool of would-be Ranger buyers to the likes of Toyota and Nissan.

The Car Exam News #18: LaHood wants to axe all cell phones for drivers, Toyota’s Prius line grows gets its own brand, & the Orange County Auto Show

LaHood wants to axe all cell phones for drivers

All drivers may have to forget about gabbing on their cell phones while driving: Automotive News is reporting that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood wants to push for a complete ban of cell phone use (including “hands-free” cell phones) by drivers in all cars. Talking and texting by drivers is a dangerous trend that has caused many traffic accidents over the years that could have been avoided had those drivers been paying attention to the road. LaHood’s push for that ban could also affect other potentially distracting technology for drivers, including GM’s OnStar and Ford’s “Sync” systems. The question is, though, if such a measure actually ever passed legislation, how would it ever be enforced? Would special technology have to be created to carry out such a monumental task? There still would be many drivers—such as there are now—who would completely ignore the law and continue their dangerous behavior. How would they be stopped?

Toyota’s Prius line grows gets its own brand

The Prius will finally stand alone: The Detroit Free Press reports that Toyota informed is U.S. dealer that it would be expanding the Prius hybrid line by two additional models and separating it into its own brand. What will the new models consist of? A larger, “Camry-sized” Prius, as well as a Prius close in size to the current car (a plug-in vehicle should also debut sometime in 2012). These move show that Toyota is serious about dominating the hybrid market—and trying to make an attempt to do the same with electric cars. Toyota’s recent hookup with electric car company, Tesla, is definitely by design.

Smart tries to get smarter—and sells Nissan built cars

Smart has been performing very poorly lately, and is apparently trying to save its behind in the U.S. market: Automotive News reports that Smart will sell a larger five-door, “B segment” car built by Nissan in the United States next year. Its only model, the crumb-sized “Smart Fortwo” has been selling poorly for the last couple of years—and it’s no wonder: the shrunken, two-seat, barely-the-size-of-a-golf-cart economy car offers little interior room, poor engine performance and fuel economy that is very mediocre considering its tiny overall size. Smart sold over 24,000 cars in the U.S. in 2008, but sales have collapsed monumentally since then: Smart has sold less than 5000 cars in the U.S. this year with only about 2 ½ months left in 2010. Yikes!

The Car Exam News #16: The recall bug bites the Tesla Roadster, BMW and Mercedes bests Lexus, & the 2012 Focus will be cheaper than the current model

The recall bug bites the Tesla Roadster

Electric cars aren’t perfect, either: Automotive News reports that over 400 Tesla Roadsters are being recalled due to the possibility that a power cable could short and catch on fire. Tesla apparently had one report in which a 12-volt cable inside of one of the Roadsters chafed a panel and caught on fire. Tesla has begun to notify owners of the potential problem and will send its service crews to customer’s homes or offices to repair the problem (during which they will install a protective sleeve over the cable to eliminate the shorting issue).

The 2012 Focus to be cheaper than the current model

In more news from USA Today, it is reporting that the 2012 Ford Focus (due next year) will start at a base price that is $20 dollars cheaper than the outgoing base 2011 Focus S model costs (which is $16, 270). Ford will also give $500 rebates to customers who order the brand new Focus early—before the end of February 2011. The Car Exam News #14: The Car Exam goes to the Coronado Speed Festival’s Media Day, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata is recalled & Ford may reduce its lineup

Follow The Car Exam on Facebook "Car Exam" and Twitter!

The Car Exam goes to the 2010 Coronado Speed Festival’s Media Day

This past Friday was the Media Day for the 13th annual Coronado Speed Festival held at N.A.S. North Island in Coronado, CA. The event is a part of San Diego’s annual “Fleet Week” events, which pays homage to San Diego’s military community. During the time The Car Exam was at the event, racers were prepping their cars for the weekend’s races, and well as making practice runs on the track in their vehicles. From classic Ford Mustangs, classic BMW racers, to newer cars like the Mini, there were lots of cars to be seen.

The fun real fun of it was watching the cars and the drivers go through their paces on the track. Loud, gurgling V8 engines and their exhaust systems filled the air with their intensity and sheer power. But as this event proves, you don’t need a V8 engine or larger to cause a ruckus on the track. There were a variety of four and six-cylinder-powered cars on hand, and they were showing their speed and finesse during the practice drifting runs on the track.

This journalist has not smelled so much scorching tire smoke and rubber in his entire life! And whatever your point of view was, the smell could have been considered either toxic by the general spectator—or absolutely intoxicating by a racing connoisseur or an all-out racing fanatic. Some of the drifts were well-controlled masterpieces, while others were desperate attempts to save face and hopefully avoid an unintentional (and probably costly) collision with one of the barriers on the track. Simply put, it was a grand experience to take in.

Various military service men and women, press members (television, print, internet bloggers and journalists) and other V.I.P.’s were on hand to take in or participate in the event (there was a line for people to sign up to go along for the ride, as well). Numerous vendors and other displays were at the Speed Festival, including Edelbrock and Russo and Steele Auctions. A Ford Motor Company trailer had also pulled up at the event just before I left.

There were two lasting memories for me at the 2010 Speed Festival Media Day: first, I encountered Joe Harding, a native Englander who was filling the radiator of his red 1939 Lagonda race car he was going to race at the event. He told me he had been racing his car for the past 22 years. I asked him if it was difficult to maintain, and he replied, with a smile, that it required “Lots of maintenance.” He also told me he wasn’t looking forward to setup of the track, because the Lagonda was not made for taking corners well. It didn’t matter, though—Joe looked happy to be there and to be racing his beloved 1939 Lagonda.

Next, there was an older gentleman riding a scooter who saw me taking photos of two 1960’s Ford Mustang racing cars parked in front of a trailer. He pulled up to me and offered to take some photos of me standing next the two cars, and I happily obliged. When he finished, he said seriously yet jokingly, “It’s no problem—that’s why we do this (Bleep!).” My interpretation of his comment: People attend the Speed Festival (and all other car events like it)—whether they are five or fifty-years old, men or women, car buffs or media members, because they enjoy seeing the automobiles and relish the lasting memories they can bring.

Ford may be taking downsizing to another level: Ford will eliminate its Mercury brand by the end of the year, and now the Automotive News is reporting that Ford may reduce it vehicle lineup to “as few as 20 models.” The report also notes Ford had 97 models when Ford CEO Alan Mulally took over Ford leadership in 2006, and that he stated, “Fewer brands means you can put more focus into improving the quality of engineering.” We’ll see if that proves to be the case, especially since Ford has already made impressive strides improving the quality of its vehicles.

Longer Battery Range for the Chevrolet Volt—maybe

More about the Chevrolet Volt: The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Chevrolet may now market the Volt as having a 50-mile travel range on its lithium-ion batteries before the gasoline engine takes over. In The Car Exam’s “The Car Exam Examines Electric Cars, Part 3,” (posted yesterday) I noted that the Volt’s battery range is 40 miles. As of this writing (9/24/10), it still states as such on the Chevrolet Volt section of the Chevrolet website. The Detroit Free Press article also states that marketing of the 50-mile plateau will depend upon E.P.A. testing, as well as its yet-to-be determined method of how to label the fuel economy figures on electric vehicles.
